Daniel A. Herbert Memorial Student Scholarship for Virginia Schools of Pharmacy

Background and Objectives

This scholarship was created in memory of long time Virginia Pharmacists Association member Daniel A Herbert. The objective of the scholarship is to help individuals in Virginia who wish to pursue a career as a pharmacy technician. It is intended to reduce the financial burden of advancing one’s career as a pharmacy technician. This $1000 education scholarship is awarded to eligible recipients to help fund attendance at a ASHP Accredited Virginia technician training course

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be recommended by a member of the Virginia Pharmacists Association.
  • Applicants must be accepted to an ASHP Accredited Pharmacy Technician Course
  • Preference will be given to those who work in or previously worked in a Virginia Pharmacy and to those who are members of the Virginia Pharmacists Association.

Requirements

Applicants must submit the following:

  1. Online application
  2. Personal Statement of no more than 500 words summarizing their eligibility for the scholarship
  3. Letter of Recommendation sent directly to the selection committee from a current or prior pharmacy supervisor or VPhA member.
  4. Proof of  Admission to a ASHP Accredited Pharmacy Technician Course.

Recipients must join the Association as a technician member.

Recipients must apply for the scholarship prior to completion of the training course.

Recipients will be recognized on the website and in publications of the Association and Foundation.  They will be asked to share their experiences with pharmacists and other health care providers in a publication and/or presentation format.

 

Use of Scholarship Funds and Payment

Awardees must use scholarship funds to help pay tuition within one year of selection or return the funds. Payment may be made to the applicant, a sponsoring pharmacy or pharmacist, or directly to the school when feasible. Proof of payment is required if not made directly to the training program.

Application Deadline

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Early submissions will be given priority while all candidates who submit by December, 31 will be reviewed by January 15.

 

Review Procedure

Upon receipt, applications will be reviewed by the VPhA Foundation Grants & Programs Committee. Factors to be considered will be: leadership qualities, civic or professional organization involvement, community service, enthusiasm and compassion for the profession, academic standing, and quality of work/employee recognition.

All applicants will be notified of request(s) for additional information, approval, or rejection.  Successful applicants will receive a Scholarship Agreement stipulating the terms, provisions, and conditions of the Scholarship.

 

Award Announcement

The award recipient will be notified within 60 days of application and recognized for the scholarship at a VPhA meeting. The award check will be made payable to the employer/VPhA member sponsor, or the training program when applicable.  The recipient is responsible for communicating correct information to the VPhA Foundation for accurate check issuance and for proof of payment to the training program if applicable.
