Overview

Medical cannabis is coming to Virginia and pharmacists are at the forefront of growing, manufacturing, and dispensing the product. Pharmacists are the most qualified health professionals to take on this role. Are you knowledgeable and prepared to educate your patients? Are you wondering how to position yourself to be the best candidate for the pharmaceutical processors? Are you confused about what the laws and regulations permit here in the state?

Register to attend this half day conference that will educate you on a variety of issues that arise with use of medical cannabis, including an understanding of the disease states for which use is beneficial. This conference will provide clinical and practical knowledge. Including, potential drug interactions that need to be evaluated before patients begin using medical cannabis. This conference provides practical knowledge to prepare you to work in a pharmaceutical processor including an overview of conducting patient consults and recommending dosage. Pharmacists in all practice settings will be impacted by the use of medical cannabis and must be prepared to discuss with patients who are considering usage.

The Virginia Medical Cannabis Coalition will have representatives from the Pharmaceutical Processors present and be available to discuss employment opportunities.

Edward M Bednarczyk , PharmD, FCCP, FAPhA

Edward M Bednarczyk is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, and director of the Center for Health Outcomes, Pharmacoinformatics and Epidemiology(cHOPE) at the University at Buffalo, SUNY, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (aka UB). He received his BS in pharmacy from UB in 1984, and completed a pharmacy practice residency at the Buffalo General Hospital in 1985. He went on to receive his PharmD degree from the Medical University of South Carolina followed by a fellowship in Clinical Cardiovascular Pharmacology at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals of Cleveland. His scholarship is split between the use of molecular imaging to explore drug effects, and drug outcomes and utilization. His clinical responsibilities are divided between nuclear medicine and neurology at the VAMC. He is serving as the president of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science (APRS) of the APhA. He established cHOPE as an unfunded center within the School of Pharmacy. It has since grown to approximately 3 million dollars in annual external funding. Dr Bednarczyk also serves as the CEO of University Pharmacy Resident Services, Inc, a 501c3 corporation for administering UB’s pharmacy residencies, chairs the Radioactive Drug Research Committee (RDRC), serves on the executive committee of the university faculty senate, and has established himself as to “go to” faculty member for all things related to medical marijuana.

Al Domieka, BSPharm

Al Domeika is a founding member of Prime Wellness of Connecticut, one of the first medical marijuana facilities open in the State of Connecticut.  Since opening in late of 2014, Prime Wellness of Connecticut services over 5,000 patients and continues to find great success in symptom relief with medical cannabis.

Having graduated from of University of Connecticut’s School of Pharmacy, Al spent over 25 years in retail pharmacy. In retail, he managed pharmacies across Connecticut with fluctuating volumes. He is also a long-standing member of the Connecticut Pharmacists Association as well as the American Pharmacist Association. He has been a featured speaker locally and nationally, including speaking at annually at the New England Pharmacist Convention, the Nebraska Pharmacist Convention in Lincoln, Nebraska, the International Symposium on Medical Cannabis Therapeutics at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, and the Virginia Pharmacist Association’s Mid-Year Conference.

Al now currently works for Acreage Holdings, the largest cannabis company in the country, and supervises pharmacy operations for 3 different dispensary facilities in the State of Connecticut, as well as assists in hiring and training new staff in dispensary facilities opening throughout the country.

 

Hunter Jamerson, J.D., M.B.A.

As a lawyer and a lobbyist, Hunter leverages a tireless work ethic, a command of relevant subject matter, and a dedication to his client’s cause in order to best advocate on behalf of his clients.

Hunter’s practice is primarily focused on the representation of health care providers and pharmaceutical manufacturers. Hunter’s knowledge of the health care sector allows him to help a client resolve a broad range of legal or public policy problems.

Hunter is one of the first lobbyists to arrive in the General Assembly and is one of the last to leave. He believes that diligence is what wins the day in legislative advocacy. Hunter does not simply monitor the General Assembly — Hunter acts. He is not afraid to push for passage of controversial legislation; Hunter invests the time, research, and energy necessary to effectively advocate his client’s position even when the opposition is strong.

A client may also have specific legal needs that Hunter can address. For example, health care providers regularly contact Hunter to defend their interests in audit disputes with Medicaid, Medicare, PBMs, or private insurance companies. Hunter also provides health care provider employment agreement review and negotiation. Additionally, Hunter is prepared to negotiate payment rates with insurers on behalf of health care providers across Virginia. Also, Hunter is experienced in representing health care providers in licensure and disciplinary matters before the various boards of the Department of Health Professions.

Hunter is committed to establishing long-term relationships with his clients. Hunter assists clients with building useful relationships with legislators, administrative agencies, and other health care sector interests. Hunter believes that the better he knows his client and its area of health care, the better he can serve his client.

Continuing Education Information

Virginia Pharmacists Association (VPhA) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
