Our Opioid Toolbox: Nalox-Dos and Don’ts

Overview

With COVID-19 coverage day in and day out, it can be easy to forget another epidemic that is still raging, the opioid epidemic. In this presentation, you will learn about the tools that we have at our disposal to screen, recognize, and intervene appropriately. The importance of naloxone, its importance, it’s counseling, and the tools available through the PMP will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the role of a pharmacist as a provider of naloxone and recall the importance of counseling prior to naloxone dispensing
  • Summarize the evidence-based rationale for the utilization of naloxone and describe the various formulations for administration
  • Identify patients at risk for opioid overdose and determine their eligibility for naloxone dispensing
  • Utilize the tools available in the PMP system to aid in identifying patients at risk
